The Gutter That Outlasts The Roof

Copper gutters are the choice for homeowners who want the system to last as long as the house. Copper does not rust, needs no paint, and develops a natural patina that moves from bright penny to brown within a year or two and to the familiar soft green over a decade or more, depending on exposure. Joints are soldered rather than sealed, so there is no sealant to fail.

SwiftHand Gutters installs copper half-round and K-style with copper downspouts, cast or formed elbows and copper or brass hangers. It is a regular request on historic homes in the Avenues, Capitol Hill, Yalecrest, Provo’s Tree Streets and Ogden’s East Bench, and on custom and timber homes in Park City, Deer Valley, Highland and Holladay where copper matches stone, timber and standing-seam copper roofs.

What To Know Before You Choose

Profiles And Details

Most copper goes on as half-round with round downspouts, which is the traditional pairing. K-style copper is available for homes that want the profile with a lifetime metal. Details such as decorative leader heads, rain chains and ornamental brackets are available and often the reason homeowners choose copper in the first place.

Patina, Or Not

Left alone, copper patinas naturally and unevenly, faster on north and wet exposures. Homeowners who want the bright finish can have it clear-coated, which slows the change for several years; those who want the green sooner can have it chemically patinated. Most of our clients let it age naturally.

Installation

Copper is installed in sections with soldered joints, so it takes longer than seamless aluminum and is done by a crew that solders regularly. Copper must be isolated from aluminum and steel to prevent galvanic corrosion, so hangers, screws and flashing are copper, brass or stainless. The runoff from a copper roof or gutter can stain light masonry, which we plan for with downspout placement.

Pricing

Copper half-round runs $35 to $60 per linear foot installed, with copper downspouts and leader heads quoted separately. A full copper system on a historic home typically costs three to five times an aluminum system, and lasts fifty years or more. See the pricing page.
