Provo has one of the oldest housing stocks in Utah County. The east bench is a snow and ice problem. Homes in Indian Hills, Oak Hills and along the foothills below Y Mountain and Rock Canyon sit in cold shade and catch storms that the valley floor misses, so six-inch gutters, larger downspouts and heat tape on north-facing eaves are standard recommendations there. Rock Canyon and Slate Canyon winds lift poorly strapped downspouts, so we strap at every elbow.
Near campus and downtown, the problem is age. A 1915 bungalow in the Tree Streets often has original crown-molding fascia partly rotted behind a gutter nailed on in the seventies. We replace sections with primed wood, keep the profile, and hang half-round on rod hangers or K-style on hidden hangers to suit the house.
