Wind is the first thing to design for in Utah County. Traverse Mountain, the Point of the Mountain and the west side around Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain get gusts that peel back poorly strapped downspouts and lift gutters hung on spikes. We use screw hangers on sixteen-inch centers on exposed runs and strap downspouts at every elbow.
The east side is a snow problem. Alpine, Highland, the Provo bench and American Fork Canyon mouths pick up heavy storms off the Wasatch and sit in cold shade half the day, so ice dams and frozen downspouts are routine. Six-inch gutters, heat tape and extensions that carry melt away from the foundation are standard recommendations there. In the older neighborhoods of Provo and Orem we see a lot of mid-century homes with original spike-hung gutters and rotted fascia, so replacement quotes include a fascia inspection.
