Sliding Snow Is The Reason Mountain Gutters Fail

A standing-seam or corrugated metal roof sheds snow in one slab once the sun hits it, and that slab takes the gutter with it, lands on whatever is below, and can weigh several tons on a long eave. Snow guards hold the snow on the roof so it melts off gradually. They are standard on metal roofs in Park City, Deer Valley, Heber, Midway, Alpine, Highland, Ogden Valley and the Cottonwood canyons, and increasingly on valley homes with metal roofs over entries, decks and garages.

SwiftHand Gutters installs pad-style snow guards and continuous snow fence on metal, tile and some asphalt roofs, sized and spaced to the roof pitch, panel type and snow load for the site. We install them with new gutters, as a stand-alone project, or with heat tape as a complete mountain roof-edge package.

What We Do

What The Service Includes

  • Pad-style snow guards in clamp-on (no roof penetration) or adhesive-mounted styles for standing-seam and corrugated metal, in a color to match the roof or clear polycarbonate
  • Continuous snow fence for long eaves, steep pitches and heavy-snow sites, clamped to standing seams
  • Layout and spacing calculated from pitch, panel type, eave length and ground snow load, in staggered rows above the eave and above entries, decks and walkways
  • Gutter protection: guards placed so snow does not shear the gutter, with heavy-gauge or steel gutters below
  • Heat tape coordination so held snow melts and drains through an open channel rather than refreezing at the eave
  • Tile and asphalt roof options where sliding is a problem over entries or decks

What It Costs

Pad-style guards run $12 to $25 each installed, and a typical mountain home needs forty to one hundred of them in staggered rows, so $800 to $2,500 for the roof. Continuous snow fence runs $25 to $45 per linear foot. See the pricing page for related gutter and heat tape costs.

Clamp-On Versus Adhesive

Clamp-on guards attach to the standing seam with set screws and do not penetrate the roof; they are the right choice on standing-seam panels and carry the manufacturer’s warranty. Adhesive-mounted guards suit corrugated and some exposed-fastener panels and need warm-weather installation to cure. We use whichever the roof calls for and never screw through a metal panel.

How It Works

What Happens When You Call

01

Measure The Roof

Pitch, panel type, eave lengths and what is below each eave: gutters, walks, decks, vehicles.

02

Design The Layout

Guard type, number of rows and spacing calculated for the site’s snow load, with extra protection above entries.

03

Install Without Penetrations

Clamp-on guards or snow fence on standing seams, adhesive guards where appropriate, color-matched to the roof.

04

Coordinate Gutters And Heat Tape

Steel or six-inch gutters and heat tape so the held snow drains instead of refreezing.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do snow guards cause ice dams?

Held snow can melt and refreeze at the eave on a warm roof, which is why we pair guards with heat tape on shaded eaves and recommend attic insulation.

No. Clamp-on guards from the major manufacturers are warranty-compatible with standing-seam panels because they do not penetrate the roof.

Yes, in specific styles that mount under shingles, usually only above entries and decks where sliding is a problem.

Usually two or three staggered rows on the lower third of the roof for a typical mountain pitch, more on steep or long eaves. We calculate it per roof.
