Most Utah homes are fine with 5-inch K-style gutters, which handle about 5,500 square feet of roof per downspout in a typical storm. We recommend stepping up to 6-inch gutters when a roof is steep (8/12 pitch or more), when a single eave collects water from a large or complex roof, or when a home sits in a canyon mouth or bench area that gets heavier snow. Six-inch gutters hold about 40 percent more water, take a 3×4 downspout, and are far less likely to overflow during spring melt. We will tell you which size makes sense for each run of your house rather than quoting one size for everything.
Seamless aluminum is the standard for Utah homes: it does not rust, it comes in more than 25 baked-on colors, and .032 gauge holds up well under snow and ice. Steel (galvanized or Galvalume) is the choice for mountain homes and metal roofs where sliding snow and ice can crush lighter gutters. Copper is a lifetime material that develops a natural patina; we pair it with half-round profiles on historic Avenues, Sugar House and Park City homes. Seamless aluminum gutters in the Salt Lake area typically run $8 to $14 per linear foot installed, with 6-inch gutters and .032 gauge at the upper end of that range. Downspouts add roughly $100 to $150 each, and copper or steel systems cost two to four times more than aluminum. Aluminum gutters come in more than 25 factory colors, including white, bronze, black, clay, almond and several grays and browns. We bring a sample ring to the estimate and can match most trim and fascia colors closely. Custom colors are available on request.
Gutter replacement on an existing home does not normally require a building permit in Salt Lake, Utah, Davis or Weber counties. New construction and some HOA communities have approval requirements for color and downspout placement, and we help with those.
We recommend .032 gauge for most Utah homes because it resists denting from ladders, ice and hail better than .027. Both are available; we will explain the difference on your quote.
Gutters do not cause or cure ice dams by themselves; attic insulation and ventilation do most of that work. Properly pitched gutters with heat tape along problem eaves keep melt water moving so it does not refreeze. We can quote heat tape with your installation.
We use ladder standoffs, set drop cloths under work areas, and route downspouts so extensions do not cross walkways or flood beds. Anything we move, we put back.
